Lead man kills himself at city park before fireworks display

Posted:

The Fourth of July celebration at Lead City Park started off with quite the scare, after a Lead man shot himself in front of a huge crowd of people.

According to a release from the lead police department, 66–year–old Wayne Mayer shot himself around 7:30 pm on Thursday night  at Manuel Brothers Park.

Mayer placed a small caliber handgun to his head. Officers told him numerous times to drop his gun, but he refused and shot himself once.

He was taken to Lead/Deadwood Regional Hospital where he later died.

Witnesses say it was scary but it didn't ruin the rest of the event.

"My granddaughter was very shook up. She's thirteen years old. She was very shook up. And I would like to say the police department, and the officers on hand did a great job," said Les Roselles, who lives in Lead.

Police say no one else was injured from the incident.
