Texting-while-driving ban approved in Aberdeen

Posted:

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) _ Aberdeen is joining six other South Dakota cities in banning texting while driving.

The City Council on Monday passed a texting-while-driving ban in city limits.  It will go into effect in about three weeks.

Drivers in the city will be breaking the law if they text, surf the Internet or send emails while behind the wheel. It'll still be OK to text in some situations, such as when a driver is seeking emergency assistance or reporting a traffic accident. Drivers also will still be allowed to make cellphone calls while driving.

Drivers caught violating the law will face a misdemeanor charge with a maximum punishment of 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Watertown, Brookings, Vermillion and Huron have similar laws.
