Rapid City Police Chief aims to fix downtown parking woes

Parking problems for the Alex Johnson Hotel have always been a problem during after hours events but that soon could be changing.

The Alex Johnson Hotel leases 70 spots from the city, but during events such as Summer Nights, these spaces can't be guaranteed, which is a problem for the hotel's guests.

Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender spoke with members of the Public Works Committee Tuesday to figure out what could be done to fix the problem.

"We are working with them today (Tuesday) to see if we can make that happen this Thursday and if not, then certainly we will by the following Thursday night," said Allender.

A city ordinance allows the RCPD to do what is necessary with this issue without council approval.
