Are mosquitoes a concern in Rapid City?

Posted:

They are the annoying little pests that bite you when you least expect it, ruining summer outings.

But are they a problem in Rapid City and is anything being done?

The combination of heat and standing water is inviting to mosquitoes but parks division manager, Lon Van Deusen says it's not a worry at this time.

He says Rapid City is not known to have a real mosquito problem and this year is no different.

While the city does spray the parks that have bodies of water in the summer months,Van Deusen says they're not seeing cause for worry.

But take precautions anyway.

"If you want to avoid mosquitoes you have to avoid some of those environments where they are going to be.

Mosquitoes are most active in the early morning hours and at dusk.

The ones that carry West Nile  typically don't show up until August.
