Insect scientists swarm to Rapid City

Fires are of course a concern here in the Black Hills and even more so due to the pine beetle infestation.

The pine beetle is one insect discussed today at an entomology conference in Rapid City.

Beetle specialists talked about ways to combat the bug as well as what efforts are being made to fix this problem.

"The only breakthrough, and remember it's a native insect doing what it normally does every 40 years or so, is just that no one alone is going to stop the problem. It's going out and thinning stands, making the stands healthier so they can better defend themselves, opening them up so it's less favorable for the beetle. A lot of stuff we've already known it's just getting people to do it."

The conference begins the 16th and goes through Wednesday the 19th.
