Ski area will stay closed a year longer

A Sheridan volunteer group says it will take a year longer than expected to open a closed down ski hill.

Antelope Butte Foundation members wanted to reopen the Antelope Butte Ski Area in the Bighorn Mountains in time for this winter.

However the group will have to put off that goal until late 2014.  The foundation's president says the group is still early in the fundraising process.

The foundation needs more than $3 million to purchase the land from the U.S. Forest Service and to fix up the lodge and equipment.

"The fundamental reality is construction season at 8,400 feet and we're not quite ready to go.  It's a sizable project.  We've got to refurbish the facilities," said foundation president Mark Weitz.

The owner of the Meadowlark Ski Lodge in the southern Bighorns has said two lodges is too many for the area because both had to close years ago.
