Rapid City's last day of school

Jamming out with air guitars and signing yearbooks,  it's obvious - kids at the St. Thomas More Middle School aren't taking the last day of school too seriously. When asked what students did today, the response was an enthusiastic "nothing!"

From the outside looking in, it would seem like the day ended early - empty halls and trash cans - but there was some work being done.

Some teachers had the students focused on cleaning. "Not really concentrating too much on any curriculum or anything of that nature but they do have to clean out their lockers and get their homerooms ready," said Anthony Flores, the seventh and eighth grade grammar teacher.

While others tried to get in the last bit of knowledge. One classroom spent their period reading a play.

No matter the tone of the last day, most agree it was emotional. "I'm pretty excited, but also sad," said Nate Skinner, a sixth grader. "I really miss my friends after this, but it's great to be out of school for summer," said Sandra Cronin, also a sixth grader.

Summer fever aside, these seventh graders are looking to next year.  "The eighth graders looked like they had a lot of fun last, this year, so I'm just proud to be like the one that everyone looks up to," said Kale Landguth, a seventh grader.

Even though the 2012-2013 year is over, it will be remembered.   "They really bonded between the grades, which is pretty unusual for a middle school but they're a great group of kids and they just, they flourished really well this year," said Liz Myscofski, assistant to the principle.

Catholic schools start the 2013–2014 school year on August 22 and the Rapid City schools start August 26.
