Rapid City, S.D. –The Rapid City Police Department will join law enforcement agencies across the state in May Mobilization efforts. This week, police will conduct saturations focused on seat belt usage, crosswalk safety, and DUI enforcement.
On Friday, May 24, officers will conduct a daytime pedestrian safety and seatbelt saturation effort. Officers will be looking for drivers who do not stop for pedestrians crossing at crosswalks and intersections, as well as drivers not wearing seatbelts. These efforts are an attempt to reduce car vs. pedestrian accidents and injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents.
On Saturday, May 25, officers will conduct a nighttime DUI saturation effort, targeting impaired drivers and seatbelt violations. In 2012, Rapid City police made 878 DUI arrests.
May Mobilization is a nationwide effort coordinated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and spearheaded locally by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety's Office of Highway Safety. For more information, visit www.nhtsa.gov.
