A Wyoming environmental group says the current rules are not strict enough for some oil and gas development procedures.
The Powder River Basin Resource Council filed a rulemaking petition with the Wyoming Oil and Gas Commission this week. The petition calls for tighter restrictions on gas flares in places like Johnson and Campbell Counties, which council members say violate state laws that prohibit the waste of natural gas.
Petition organizers say these gas flares present many problems to nearby landowners.
"It's very loud. The flares can burn very dirty with black smoke. There's a lot of emissions that come off those flares, the hydrocarbons and toxic emissions that affect people's health," said Jill Morrison with the Powder River Basin Resource Council.
A spokesperson says the Oil and Gas Commission received the petition but has not reviewed it yet and declined further comment.
