Lakota high school graduates honored at feathering ceremony

Posted:

Lakota students graduating from high school were honored Wednesday at special feathering ceremony at Stevens High School.

Native American students from not only Rapid City, but also surrounding towns attended the event. Teachers say that ten percent of Native Americans know the language so events like this are important to keep the culture alive.

"We tell them all about the ceremonies and the different rights and how to keep that going. And to remember that these ceremonies, they must keep going," said Harriet Brings, a Lakota language teacher at Central High School.

62 students were honored at the ceremony.
