Douglas students get unique art lesson on graffiti

Some Douglas Middle School artists took a rather unusual field trip to one Rapid City landmark.

Art Alley in Downtown Rapid City played host to a rather unique art lesson on graffiti.

It was all part of exposing the students to the different kinds of artwork by Native American artists.

Local graffiti artist Derek Smith has painted several pieces featured in the alley & spoke about how trying new things often opens young artists up to new ways to express themselves, "There was once upon a time where I was where they are & if somebody wouldn't have helped me when I was where they are now, I couldn't be where I am in my artwork. I couldn't have progressed or have grown as much."

Although it is considered illegal without permission in most areas of the city, the controversial medium has found a home free of prosecution in the space between 6th and 7th streets.
