Noem bill would create Office of Tribal Relations at USDA

Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) introduced legislation that would permanently establish an Office of Tribal Relations within the United States Department of Agriculture.

Noem says the legislation would not cost taxpayers any additional dollars, and instead would require the USDA to use existing resources to establish the office.

She says she had a couple of reasons for introducing this legislature.

"Some of the tribes that I have had conversations with in South Dakota simply weren't aware of all of the programs that they could quality for within USDA, or didn't feel like there was good communication there before," said Noem.

The Tribal Relations Office would be within the Office of the Secretary; ensuring that the head of the USDA would be advised on policies related to Native American Tribes.
