Groundbreaking ceremony: Rippin Rapids officially under construction

In less than one year's time, the dirt patch at Lacrosse Street and Mall Drive in Rapid City will be home to South Dakota's largest water park.

The multi- million dollar project is expected to bring a major boost to year round tourism.

As of Wednesday, Rippin Rapids Resort and Adventure Sports is officially under construction.
The 93,000 square foot water park, will feature a 77,000 square feet of indoor recreation, making it South Dakota's largest water park.

Monte Hartl with Capitol Management says the materials for the six story building are arriving and construction on the complex will begin shortly.

The building will house waterslides, tube rides, a wave machine for surfing, and even a zip line.

Hartl says they are still working out pricing but will be offering incentives, deals, and memberships for locals.

"I think it's going to be a great attraction. I think one of the things that's exciting about it is it will promote the Black Hills Attractions, other attractions. Such as Sylvan Lake, Devils Tower, and all the National Parks," says Hartl.
The resort will also have several retail spaces available for rent. It's slated to open May first of next year.
