April ranks coldest on record for many KOTA Territory communities

Our meteorologists told you April was the snowiest on record, and on track to be the coldest. Now the official numbers are in.

April will go down in history as the coldest on record for more than a half dozen locations in western South Dakota.

Rapid City Regional Airport, Newell, Mount Rushmore, and Pactola Dam will all put April 2013 in the number one spot.

The airport beat its average April temperature by 1.3 degrees, coming in at just 36.7 degrees for the month.

The previous coldest April on record was in 1950 with an average of 38 degrees.

And if it wasn't the coldest, it did rank in the top five coldest for other KOTA Territory communities.
April 2013 is the 4th coldest for Spearfish, 2nd coldest for Rapid City, and 5th coldest for Hot Springs.
