Kadoka family hands over keys to hardware store

Posted:

The hardware store has been a staple in Kadoka for decades. After 67 years, the family who owns Hogen's Hardware has decided it's time for a change and they are passing over the keys to another couple.

Jackie Stilwell is a regular at Hogen's Hardware.

"I probably come in the hardware store a couple times a week at least," said Stilwell.

But this week is a little different. New owners are taking over.

"This hardware store is very important to me and to the whole community and we're glad that Don and Randi didn't just close it up," said Stilwell.

It's been in Randi Oyan's family for close to seven decades. She and her husband have been in charge for more than 30 years. But they say it's time for change.

"We thought maybe another member of the family would want to do that but the timing wasn't right for them," said Oyan.

If the hardware store wasn't here the nearest one is more than 20 miles away. Oyan says it's a vital part of the community.

"We did not want to have to close the store. That would have been way harder than turning over the keys to a new owner," said Oyan.

Florence Hogen says after her husband came back from World War II they decided to open up the hardware store. She has mixed feelings about it being sold.

"I've lost some sleep trying to get used to the idea that it won't be part of our family anymore, but that's fine," said Hogen.

The Oyan's are now showing the ropes to new owners, the Fromm's. But they won't be forgotten.

"It's kind of sad to see Don, Randi, and Florence going out of the hardware business but we're so happy to bring in a young couple to keep Kadoka going and growing," said Stilwell.

The community is saying goodbye and looking forward to what's next with the hardware store.  The Oyan's say they're now going to spend some of their time traveling. They also say the Fromm's can call them if they have any questions with running the store.

New 24-hour recycling center replaces old Fairmont site

You’ll have to go the extra mile if you want to be eco-friendly. The old Fairmont site where people use to drop off their recyclables and yard waste is now closed. It's been replaced with a new 24-hour facility on Highway 79 at the entrance to the landfill. Karl Merbach, superintendent of the Solid Waste Operations, said the city decided to take the money it would have used to repair the Fairmont site and build the new facility.
