RCFD practices rescue in below ground high risk scenario

The Rapid City Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team is trying to save two people trapped below ground at the Rapid City Landfill.

At least that's what they're training for. The two people trapped are actually plastic dummies.

In this situation, a concrete culvert and piles of dirt fell on top of the two - trapping them.

Rescuers first made contact with the victims, checked to make sure there were no hazardous gases in the trench, then put panels in place to keep more dirt and rocks from falling in.

Fire Department Spokesman Brent Long says these scenarios aren't common, but do happen in our area, "We've had a couple of these in the Rapid City area over the last couple of years. This is something that goes along with more of an industrial site or a construction site, this type of event."
20 men are participating in the day long exercise.
