Smoke detectors alert Rapid City family of morning fire

Two children and their mother were able to escape a morning house fire in Rapid City Monday thanks to working smoke detectors.

The call came in at 8:00 a.m. Units arrived at the Schamber Street home to find heavy smoke pouring out. The family met with crews to let them know everyone was out safely.

Firefighters were able to knock down the flames in about 15 minutes.

Fortunately, the home had properly working smoke detectors which alerted the people inside. They were able to get out the front door before the fire advanced and cut that escape route off.

The cause is under investigation and the Red Cross is assisting the family with shelter.
