$130 million development going in on Rapid City's east side


Beginning this fall, Rapid City will see major growth on the eastern end.  A $130 million project is slated to begin in a matter of months, bringing hundreds of homes and apartments to the area, plus new businesses and a recreation area.

The site is just south of S. Highway 44 and east of Elk Vale Road. The neighborhood will include hundreds of single family homes and apartments, a medical office, gas station, retail and a bike path.

"There will be a lot of synergy to bring in really quality development to the east side of Rapid City, and to bring in some badly needed services like medical and retail," the lead developer, Hani Shafi, said.

Shafi says the area, named Orchard Meadows for the fruit trees that will be planted, is an ideal place to develop.  "It's the most economical area to develop and to provide affordable quality living for the people of the community," Shafi said.

Construction on some of the 125 homes will begin this fall.  In addition, there will be an apartment complex near a man-made lake, and a bike path lined with fruit trees.

"The development and quality that's happening in that particular gateway is really important for the City," Ben Snow, President of the Economic Development Partnership in Rapid City said. "We spent $20 million making the airport nice and now we need to make sure this gateway looks nice," he continued. A community, according to Shafi, that has a demand for more homes and services.

Homes in the area will range in price from $180,000 to $280,000.  Shafi says he's working with a few different builders. He also says preliminary discussions have begun with different retailers, including a grocery store.
