South Dakota School of Mines names new president: Wilson

Posted: Updated:

After months of lengthy interviews, the search for a new president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is over.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon the South Dakota Board of Regents announced that Heather Wilson will be Doctor Robert Wharton's successor. The search for a new president began in November 2012 after Wharton died unexpectedly in September from complications of cancer treatments.

It was standing room only at the Surbeck Center as Wilson was named the first female president of the School of Mines.

Wilson is a former congresswoman from New Mexico; where she spent a decade serving in the U.S. Congress.

She's a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a Rhodes Scholar with a Master's and Doctoral degree from Oxford University.

Wilson says she and her family are excited to make rapid city their new home.

And she knows she has big shoes to fill; following in the footsteps of Dr. Wharton.

"It also sets a high standard and I hope to meet that standard. Nobody can do this kind of job alone. The great thing is when you reach out, people reach back and we can do great things together," said Wilson.

"We're excited to welcome Dr. Wilson to the Board of Regent's family in terms of the presidents of the universities and so on," said Dean Krogman, President of the South Dakota Board of Regents.

Wilson will begin her role as president on June 17th.

Duane Hrncir, who was named acting president of the School of Mines after Wharton died; was in the running for the permanent job. But Krogman says Hrncir will resume his role as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
