The Spearfish Convention Center could be expanded but right now a board is looking at the potential financial risks it might pose for the city and businesses that would be required to foot the $5.3 million.
Businesses that would help pay for the building are the ones near the convention center and would be benefiting from it. Scott Stampe, who owns a motel in Spearfish, says the expansion is needed to accommodate more people. But he also admits they're might be some problems.
"There are some economic threats to it. For instance one of them is gaming in deadwood and the expansion of the number of convention centers in deadwood. they're pulling away from the groups available to come to our convention center here in spearfish," said Stampe.
The Convention Center is 10 years old and talks of an expansion have been going on for a year.
