Passenger numbers down at Rapid City Regional Airport

Fewer people flew in and out of Rapid City Regional Airport during the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same time last year.
Rapid City Regional Airport Director Cameron Humphries says passenger numbers declined in 2011 and in 2012.  Humphries attributes the decline, in part, to a nation-wide reduction in seats.
He says airlines have reduced the number of seats available in an effort to increase demand, raise ticket prices and earn a profit.

While the cost of flying and a downturn in the economy have prevented some people from taking to the air, Humphries expects the number of passengers to pick-up in the coming months. "Our forecast shows that we're going to have a strong summer and strong fall so we're anticipating that by this fall our numbers will be up or even," Humphries said.
The number of passengers is down about 10 percent from 2010, which was a record breaking year for the airport.
