5k in memory of local man who died; provides bright future for others

And while one group is celebrating at Black Hills State Sunday morning, another group runs to honor a Black Hills State student who died in a car accident nearly three decades ago.
Dozens of runners participated in the 28th Annual Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Run at Black Hills State University.

Kevin Whirlwind Horse was a student at the school who was killed in a car accident in 1984.

For the last 24 years his mother Mae has organized a 5k run along with other races, to raise money for a scholarship program in his name.

"Oh it feels great doing it in his memory. He was a very special young man. In his short 24 years here he did a lot, he enjoyed life," says Mae Whirlwind Horse.

The scholarship is presented each year to an American Indian Sophomore, who demonstrates outstanding academic ability, just like Kevin did.
