Last stretch of interstate reopens

Posted:

South Dakota Department of Transportation officials announce the section of Interstate 90 between Chamberlain and Mitchell is now open. This opens I-90 completely, from the Wyoming border to the Minnesota border.

"The 14-mile construction project that places traffic head-to-head near Mitchell has made it challenging for crews to clear the roadway, making it safe for travel," says Tammy Williams, Mitchell area engineer for the South Dakota Department of Transportation. "Drivers will need to slow down and drive with extreme caution through that area until temperatures warm up and the storm has moved out of the area."

Motorists are reminded that even though roadways are open, winter driving conditions still exist with areas of ice and packed snow and many highways in northeast South Dakota still have posted "No-Travel" advisories.

Department of Transportation crews are out working to clear roadways, be cautious when approaching snow plows by slowing down and giving them plenty of room to work.

Travelers are encouraged to visit www.safetravelusa.com/sd or call 511 to check the latest road conditions and travel advisories.
