Rapid City Regional Airport is closed. Maintenance and Operations personnel are working to reopen the facility by 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. However, reopening will be weather dependent.
As of 4:00 PM Tuesday, the Rapid City Regional Airport is closed. Cameron Humphres, Executive Director of the Airport says they plan to re-open tomorrow morning at 5:00 A.M. pending on the weather conditions.
The snow grounded most of the flights in and out of KOTA Territory Tuesday; frustrating many travelers.
Cameron Humphres, Executive Director of Rapid City Regional Airport says only one flight tried to take off this afternoon, but was grounded because of the weather.
All flights out of Rapid City were canceled for the afternoon because no flights were able to fly into Rapid City.
But even as the snow continued to fall, Humphres says his staff has been able to keep the runways clear.
"The real issue right now for air travelers is visibility. The visibility because of the blowing snow has been at times less than a 1/4 mile; which is a minimum that most of our airlines need to be able to take off and land," said Humphres.
"Yesterday morning I was canceled. And then it was canceled all day and now I'm here this morning and all my flights for the day have been canceled as well," said Colleen Demarce, a traveler trying to get home to Cape Cod.
ALL arrivals for the remainder of the night are canceled.
