Man dies in mountain bike crash

UPDATE: The man who died in the mountain bike crash near Rockerville has been identified as Curtis James VanOsdel.

A 21-year-old man has died after crashing his mountain bike in the Black Hills. First responders had to hike on a trail, just off of Silver Mountain Road, near Rockerville, to get to the biker.

They did CPR on scene repeatedly, and then he was rushed to Rapid City Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  According to Pennington County Sheriff Sergeant Greg Foster, the man, who is an experienced rider, came down a steep hill and hit a rock, which caused him to run into a tree. He was wearing a helmet.

His identity is being withheld until his family and friends are notified.
 
According to experienced mountain bike riders at the scene, the area where the accident occurred has some of the most difficult mountain bike trails in the hills.
