Tax experts suggest to double check before making an online donation

Posted:

Recent events like Hurricane Sandy have people wanting to make online donations. But tax experts say when making an online donation you should make sure it's a reputable organization. They also suggest you check if it has an 501 (c) 3, which is a tax code for a charitable organization.

"For things like that where you're dealing with online, it would be to go through more of the respectable sites such as your United Way or your Red Cross. Those are a larger 501 (c) 3. You can count on them being a charitable organization," said Kevin Sickels, partner at Ketel Thortenson, LLP.

If you are not sure if a donation site is legitimate, you can go to the IRS website to see what organizations are recognized.
