Soon there will be an easier and more scenic way to travel on foot from the Civic Center to downtown. Construction on the Memorial Park Promenade is underway. When it is complete there will be a 40 foot wide walkway, 88 new trees, and 80 lights.
There will also be a new pedestrian friendly crosswalk on the busy Omaha Street. Organizers of the project say this is a very important part of bringing people downtown.
"We've always believed that the connectivity from downtown to the Civic Center just seems like it really isn't there. The Promenade will give it that connectivity. The Civic Center gets 1.2 million people a year and let's get some of them to walk downtown too," said Dan Senftner, President and CEO of Destination Rapid City.
Seftner says because of the mild winter the Promenade project is ahead of schedule and should be complete by the fall.
