Local child protection organizations hold "Awareness March"

Each year, an alarming number of children in KOTA Territory and across the county are subject to abuse at the hands of their caregivers.  This month local child protection agencies and organizations celebrate legislation and community members that keep them safe.
An 'Awareness March', organized by CASA for Child abuse prevention month, took place Wednesday, beginning at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center parking lot and ending at the Pennington County Courthouse.

Organizers say this month is a time to celebrate the important roles that communities play in protecting children. "It is happening in our community and it's a dirty little secret that nobody wants to talk about, but in order to prevent it we have to talk about it and acknowledge that it's happening in our own backyard," CASA Executive Director Chad Catron said.

Thirty-nine years ago, the first federal child protection legislation was passed, do in large part to public awareness campaigns that highlight the importance of keeping kids safe.
