Mother faces child abuse charges for leaving toddler in burning home

Responding to smoke alarms, police broke down the door of a Rapid City mothers home, to find her toddler alone inside last week. Wednesday, she appears in front of a judge.
Angelita Elk Boy, 38, is charged with aggravated child abuse on a child under seven years old and DUI  fourth offence.

After allegedly leaving her 16 month old male child alone in their home at Knollwood Townhomes in Rapid City for an undisclosed amount of time, Elk Boy later appeared on the scene and was arrested for DUI.
The child was taken to the hospital, but his condition has not been released.

Elk boy is also charged with aggravated child abuse in another case, in which prosecutors allege she harbored her adult son -who has been convicted of child abuse - from authorities.
Defense attorneys say a plea deal is in the works for the first child abuse charge. She faces 20 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
