Pennington County Juvenile Diversion program gets funding boost

Pennington County's Juvenile Diversion program is getting a boost in funding to meet a growing need.
County Commissioners approved a $19,000 supplement to the program's budget Tuesday that will go toward the purchase of a new transport van. Much of the approved funds came from a federal grant awarded to the program for their high success rate.

The program seeks to help keep teens out of the court system by using community services, drug and alcohol classes and mock trial exercises.

The program has seen its client population (kids dealing with truancy and misdemeanor crimes) double to 2,000 in the last year.
The new transport vehicle will be used so staff can act as 'unofficial probation officers' and visit kids at their schools to make sure they're fulfilling their program requirements.
