The Federal Emergency Management Agency directed each county in all 50 states to update their floodplain maps. Now it's Pennington County's turn and some residents are not happy that they'll have to get flood insurance.
There are about five areas in Rapid City that will be affected. Dale Tech, City Engineer, says it is important to update these maps.
"Some of the old maps were very inaccurate, were very poor. The new maps certainly do reflect the true flood hazard that is out there so people that do have homes that are affected are understandably upset because they are going to be required to obtain flood insurance," said Tech.
Some of the homes affected include ones on Nebraska, East Centennial and East Mead streets. In order to find current flood maps, visit the public works website.
