Sen. Thune: Johnson resignation may shift balance of power

South Dakota's Republican Senator John Thune says he wishes Johnson well, no matter his decision.

Thune was in Sioux Falls Monday speaking to students at Augustana college.

As far as whether Johnson's retirement would represent a prime opportunity for republicans to pick up a seat in the senate, Thune said his main goal is to shift the balance of power to reduce gridlock and get down to the business of solving America's problems.
"I guess I hope that whatever happens and whether Tim decides to run or not that we'll be in a position after the next election to better influence and shape what happens in a way that is conducive to solving this country's problems. Today, there's a lot of gridlock, and it's not a good thing for the country," said Thune.
Senator Thune spoke to students at Augustana college about the budget passed by the senate Saturday morning.
