South Dakota Sen. Johnson schedules news conference on future plans

Senator Tim Johnson has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon in Vermillion to discuss his future political plans.

According to a news release from the senator's office, Johnson's news conference will be held at his alma mater, the University of South Dakota, at 3:00pm CDT.  Reuters' news service goes a step further reporting that Johnson will announce his retirement.

There is wide speculation that if the 66-year-old Democrat doesn't run, his son, Brendan or former Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin might. Brendan Johnson is currently the U.S. Attorney in South Dakota. Herseth-Sandlin is general counsel at Raven Industries.

Former South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds has already announced he will run for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat.
