Fewer people interested in joining city government?

Many Black Hills cities are seeing a certain public ambivalence when it comes to running for elected office.
Belle Fourche, Newell and Summerset will hold no municipal elections this year.

Many city leaders say it's a highly unusual trend, especially since in previous elections up to three people often competed for the same opening.

Belle Fourche Mayor Gary Hendrickson says many people are reluctant to sacrifice their time for a job that requires tough skin, and a lot of attention.
"You can see that in all types of volunteer type issues. Our fire department, ambulance, that type of thing. In particular the elections here and in the whole Black Hills seem to be down as far as the number of people stepping up to help their community," said Hendrickson.
Many other towns however are seeing some competition for local office.

Mayors will be elected in Sturgis, Lead, Custer, Deadwood, and Spearfish.
