Petition circulating to recall Rapid City Councilman Bill Clayton

Posted: Updated:

Former Rapid City councilman and Republican state legislator Gary Brown is circulating a petition that would force a recall of Rapid City alderman Bill Clayton who serves in ward one.

Brown's efforts come after Clayton's alleged comments to former KOTA-TV reporter, Taisha Walker, who is African American.  As a result of Clayton's alleged actions, Brown says he has had several people in ward one approach him and ask what can be done to replace Clayton.  Brown says he is circulating the petitions to serve the people of ward one.  He says if he is able to roundup enough signatures for a recall election, it will show that there is a sincere concern about Clayton's representation in the ward.

Brown must collect 6,172 petition signatures from voters in Rapid City to get a recall election.  If successful, Ward 1 voters will decide whether to keep Clayton or vote for someone else.

Brown says he will run for Clayton's seat to finish his term, but does not plan to run in the next election.

Clayton did not returns calls from KOTA Territory News seeking comment on the recall.
