Accused New Years Day kidnapper heads to trial

A Rapid City man charged in a New Year's Day motel kidnapping heads for trial.
State prosecutors say Luke Elk Nation, 29, severely beat and held a woman against her will at the South Dakota Rose Inn on January 1st.

Last month he pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, assault and possessing methampetamine.

A two day trial is scheduled for May 15 and 16th.

Prosecutors allege Elk Nation has been convicted of at least two prior felonies, including third offense DUI, and failure to appear.

He faces upwards of 40 years in prison if convicted.
