Correctional Officer, Inmates injured in Black Hills accident

(Deadwood, S.D.)- A correctional officer and state prison inmates were injured Monday morning when a state vehicle transporting them to a work site was involved in a rollover accident in the Northern Black Hills.

The correctional officer was transporting seven inmates from the Rapid City Minimum Unit to a work site near Deadwood when the Chevy Suburban they were traveling in slid into the ditch and rolled near mile post 48 along Highway 14A at approximately 7:30 a.m. MDT. The roads in the area were reported to be slippery at the time of the accident.

The inmates remained at the scene of the accident and were compliant. An inmate used a radio in the vehicle to alert authorities to the accident and request assistance for those injured.

One of the inmates was airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital. He is currently being treated for injuries suffered in the accident.

The remaining six inmates were taken to the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital.  One of the inmates suffered an injured shoulder, while two of the other inmates were treated for minor injuries. The other three inmates were not injured. All six of those inmates have since been transported back to the unit in Rapid City. They will be seen by medical staff there and allowed to contact family members.

The correctional officer was transported to the Sturgis Regional Hospital for treatment and evaluation. He has also been released and has returned to Rapid City.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
