Rapid City businesses will see some terrific revenue this weekend from the Boys Class A State Basketball Tournament, but soon all tournaments could be held in Sioux Falls.
Officials from the Rapid City Convention and Visitors Bureau expect local businesses to see more than $7,000,000 in direct spending from basketball fans in town through Saturday.
But next fall Sioux Falls will open the state of the art, Sanford Events Center that has convinced some to discuss moving all state basketball tournaments to South Dakota's largest city.
Rushmore Plaza Civic Center General Manager Brian Maliske is part of the futures committee exploring possible renovations here in Rapid City.
"For Wayne Carney and his group to say we want to look at moving everything to Sioux Falls, I understand the conversation. I don't agree with it. And I'm committed to helping Rapid City at least get back on equal footing with Sioux Falls," said Maliske.
The agreement for Rapid City to be in rotation for a tournament host city expires in 2015.
