Sanford lab director emeritus talks about the lab's importance

Posted:

The Swiss Alps and Black Hills have more in common than one would think. They both have world class underground science laboratories.

On Thursday Jose Alonso, the Director Emeritus at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, explained how the physicists are doing similar work to the nuclear research center, CERN, in Switzerland. Alonso said their missions are similar: to discover rare materials in order to better understand how the universe works.

"We're studying neutrinos, dark matter which are of great interest for them and the work that we are doing is just as important and shedding light on the puzzles of nature," said Alonso.

Since the research at the Sanford Lab is funded by taxpayer money, Alonso said it's important to keep the public informed. He also mentioned that the next big event for the lab will be flipping the switch on a dark matter detector called LUX.
