Rapid City Police Department under the microscope

Posted:

The Rapid City Police Department will be under the microscope as a team of assessors from other law enforcement agencies around the nation arrived to inspect the department.

"We're looking to see that the agency's policies and practices match up and they're doing what they say they're doing. That's the whole point of an assessment is to make sure they're following the best practices in law enforcement," says Gwennet County Police Chief Charles Walters, in town from Georgia.

The inspection lasts thru Thursday as assessors will examine more than 490 different standards to determine whether the force should keep accreditation status.

Even with such high standards Rapid City Police Chief Allender isn't worried.

"There's no doubts in my mind. We work at it everyday. Largely this accreditation concept is what every employee who works here knows from the moment they are hired until the moment they retire," says Allender.

Chief Allender says they'll know next week if they will remain accreditited for another three years.
