New Underwood teacher sentenced for sexual contact with underage teen

Posted:

A New Underwood teacher is sentenced to seven years in prison for having sex with one of his underage students.

Judge Janine Kern sentenced Kyle Keegan, 26, to serve all but four years of that sentence.

Keegan, a teacher and former sports coach at a New Underwood high school, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual contact with a 15 year old.

Prosecutors say he groomed his child victim by exchanging flirty texts and driving her to his apartment on the night of the crime.

Defense attorney Tim Rensch says Keegan expressed deep remorse for his actions, but the ruling was not too far off the mark.

"It was more than we had asked for, but I think the judge was very fair. I think she took into consideration other things. One thing about this case is, it's not a child molestation case, it's a statutory rape case," said Rensch.

Keegan will be eligible for parole after serving 50 percent of his remaining three year sentence.
