Educators win some and lose some in 2013 legislative session

Posted:

Each legislative session, bills that deal both directly and indirectly with education tend to generate conversation, and this year was no different.

From the school sentinel bill, which would allow guns in schools under certain circumstances, to a bill that would provide more funding for technical schools, this year's session was anything but dull.

Perhaps the most promising news out of this session for educators is the three percent increase in funding and the one-time one percent dollars.  "We're hopeful as to what happened in this legislative session," Rapid City Superintendent Dr. Tim Mitchell said.  "I think there was a lot of really good discussion about things in education that are very important," he continued.

Doctor Mitchell says he's also encouraged about ongoing conversation regarding the importance of early education. Legislators plan to do a summer study on the issue this year.
