RCPD launches crime tip app for android phones

By Tarah Heupel, RCPD spokesperson

Rapid City, S.D. –It's easier than ever to send anonymous crime tips to the Rapid City Police Department  on the go, with free Tip411 apps for Android and Apple devices.

The RCPD launched Tip411 in July 2011, to allow citizens to send anonymous tips to police via text message or the Internet. The department recently created a free Android app to make it easier to send crime tips from mobile phones. The free app for Apple users launched last fall.

The apps can be found in the iTunes and Google Play stores by searching ‘RCPD Tips.'

Citizens can now send anonymous tips by:

  • Using the free Apple app, available in the iTunes store.
  • Using the free Android app, available in the Google Play store.
  • Texting ‘RCPD' and the info to 847411.
  • Filling out a secure online form at www.rcgov.org/Police/crimeprevention.html.
  • Clicking the ‘Submit a Tip' tab on the RCPD Facebook page.

All messages sent via Tip411 are routed through a third party and stripped of any identifying information (phone number, IP address, etc) before being delivered to police. The program is not monitored 24/7, and should not be used as a replacement for dialing 911 in an emergency, or for an incident happening live.

There is no cost to the public to submit tips, though standard text messaging rates from the user's mobile provider may apply.
