Man to be re-sentenced for Sheridan slaying

Posted:

SHERIDAN, Wyo. (AP) _ A man serving life in prison for the slaying of a Sheridan businessman will be re-sentenced this year.

District Judge John Fenn agreed to sentence Wyatt Bear Cloud in August or September.

Until recently, state law mandated either life or life without parole for juveniles convicted of first-degree murder, but a U.S. Supreme Court ruling now requires judges to consider other options. Additionally, Gov. Matt Mead has signed a bill specifying that such juveniles should be eligible for parole after serving 25 years.

That law takes effect July 1.

Bear Cloud was convicted of killing Robert Ernst during a home invasion in 2009. Bear Cloud was 16 at the time of the slaying.

Two other defendants were teens at the time, though one was an adult. They received life without parole.
