Legislators to decide how to spend budget surplus this week

The 2013 South Dakota Legislative session is almost complete.  But before the lawmakers head back home for good they must adopt a finalized budget.

Lawmakers will determine budget estimates Monday, but they expect to announce that this year's budget includes a $16 million surplus.

Even though that is just a small fraction of the total $1.3 billion budget, legislators believe the extra money will do some good.

Representative Dan Dryden (R-Rapid City) of says a few areas will benefit the most from the surplus.

"We're trying to develop an economic development plan.  We're looking at education and that would involve the K-12 public schools, as well as the four technical institutes and then the Board of Regents," said Dryden.

Dryden says lawmakers also plan on dedicating some of the surplus to Medicaid.
