BHSU celebrates 130 years of operation; looks to future

Black Hills State University faculty and students celebrated Founders Day Wednesday.

The university, founded in 1883, has gone through four name changes, and evolved from a single-purpose institution specializing in teaching to a multi-purpose school with more than 70 degree programs.

The additional programs helped grow BHSU from just a handful of students, to the more than 4,400 who attend now.

And BHSU leaders say that growth leads to a promising future.  "To recognize that we have made significant gains over the 130 years for our history, but also to reflect on what's going to happen in the future. We will be here another 130 years," says BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp.
"Black Hills State is very successful at what we do and we have been doing it now for 130 years, even though there have been a lot of changes," says Vice President of University Events Steve Meeker.
Part of the festivities included a fashion show, showing the style and color changes of BHSU sportswear.
