SD bill targeting repeat speeders fails

A bill that would add speeding to the list of offences that could cost you your license has been killed.

The Senate Transportation committee shot down the legislation with a vote of 4 to 3, Wednesday.

Under the bill, drivers who racked up 15 points in a 12-month period for reckless offenses like speeding would have their licenses suspended.

Supporters say, the more stringent the point system is, the more the vehicle fatality rate drops.

Committee members ultimately ruled that higher fines may have more of an impact.
Last year, 38,000 speeding tickets were issued in South Dakota.
