Pro-Choice supporters rally in downtown Rapid City to oppose bill

Posted: Updated:

NARAL Pro-Choice supporters rallied in Rapid City Tuesday in opposition to House Bill 1237. The legislation would require changes to the waiting period before a woman can get an abortion.

NARAL members gathered at the corner of 6th Street and Main Street holding signs that read "We need affordable care."

Alisha Sedor, Executive Director of NARAL, says the new bill would exclude weekends and holidays from the mandatory 72- hour waiting period. Sedor and other rally members say it's not the government's place to intervene.

"People are sick of the government inserting themselves into private medical decisions and these people who are here today are really strong supporters. And, I really appreciate them coming out in the cold and standing with us," Sedor said.

Supporters of the HB 1237 says it is meant to give women more time to get counseling since crisis pregnancy centers might not be open on weekends or holidays.

This bill passed the House 56-13.  It now moves to the Senate.
