Man accused of child rape used church to access victim

Prosecutors say a Rapid City man accused of rape used his position in a community church to access his child victim.

Michael Slaughter, 36, is charged with two counts of first degree rape and two counts of sexual contact with a person under 13 years of age.

Tuesday Slaughter's defense attorney argued to have his $200,000  bond reduced, citing his large family, clean criminal history and active church record.

Prosecutors say Slaughter took advantage of his position within his church to access his alleged victim, a child of five, when the alleged rape occurred in 2010.

Judge Wally Ecklund denied the bond reduction request.
Prosecutors say Slaughter also has a no-bond bench warrant in Illinois for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child.

He faces life in prison if convicted.
