Pennington Co. uses disaster fund to supplement pine beetle program

Pennington County commissioners have approved a significant boost in funding to help rid West River of the Mountain Pine Beetle.
Tuesday, commissioners approved an $80,303 budget supplement to the pine beetle fund to be paid from the emergency disaster fund.

The 2013 Mountain Pine Beetle budget dried up late last year after a mild winter fast-tracked many of the county's eradication efforts.

More funding sources will have to be sought come September, when the beetle season begins again.

Luckily, a bill in the South Dakota House may provide some relief.
"It matches for every dollar we spend with two dollars from the state. So we can do three times the work with the same budget," said Julie Pearson, Pennington county Auditor.
According to Pearson, annual funding to fight the beetle has been upwards of half a million dollars.
